Beginners often hear that heel striking is “bad,” but that is too simple. Many distance runners heel strike, and heel striking alone does not automatically mean poor form. Current evidence does not show that one foot strike pattern is inherently superior for running economy across all runners.457
The more important question is often where your foot lands relative to your body. You can heel strike gently with the foot close to underneath you, or you can land far ahead with a stiff leg and create a braking effect. That second pattern is overstriding.

Single-leg deadlifts train hamstrings, glutes, ankles, balance and core control. These qualities matter because running is essentially a repeated series of single-leg landings.
- Stand on your left leg with a slightly bent knee.
- Hinge forward at the hips while extending the other leg behind you.
- Keep your back straight and hips square.
- Pause briefly when your torso is near parallel to the floor.
- Return to the starting position with control.

Glute Bridges
